The Italian Market has long been an exciting local melting pot of culture and cuisine. Now the bustling area plays host to a truly mixed-up phenomenon imported from Fishtown that combines the fun of late-night bar karaoke with the crazy humor of a comedy puppet show. The award-winning Puppet Karaoke Universe Show has been running steadily for over two years in the Philadelphia area, but this is the first time that the genre-crossing event has traveled as far south as the new Connie's Ric-Rac on south 9th St.
Every edition of this ongoing show features an ever-growing cast of hilarious and bizarre puppet characters, such as the exceedingly nervous Tony Trainwreck or the super-silly Boxy Twins. Just like real karaoke, a large catalog of pop favorites is available; everything from Elvis and Sinatra, to Bowie and Bananarama. The audience can simply watch the show, a fusion of improv theatre and soulful singing, or enter the competition as contestants with their own puppets. A crafts table, known as the Emergency Puppet Construction Zone is onsite for those who feel the last-minute urge to join in the fun. Highlights from the Puppet Karaoke Universe Show are podcast and prizes are often presented for the best guest puppets of the night. Connie's Ric-Rac is a new comedy theatre in the heart of the Italian Market, featuring a slew of unusual shows and performances. The PKU show is produced by R.S. Purcell and Alex Strang of the comedy troupe Waiting For Cable. Connie's is located at 1132 S. 9th St and is a BYOB establishment. The show is Saturday, January 20th at 9:00 PM.
