Philadelphia's premiere sketch comedy troupe, The Minor Prophets, will host the Saturday Night Puppet Karaoke Fever Show at the M-Room, 15 W Girard Ave, in the first of a series of celebrity-hosted Puppet Karaoke events, produced by Alex Strang and R.S. Purcell of Waiting For Cable.
The Minor Prophets have been performing successful sketch comedy throughout Philadelphia, New York and Atlantic City in popular live shows such as World War Five, EXERCISE! and Raw Dog, and have produced over 25 films. Their repertoire is a multimedia mix of live stand-up and projected comedy shorts, with the occasional musical number thrown in for good measure. Philadelphia Weekly's Maggie Serota claims The Minor Prophets "do all they can to flout convention." The Triangle's Mishael Devlin calls their short films "absurdity in motion," and The Philadelphia Inquirer's A.D. Amorosi declares the troupe "whoopsie good fun." The Puppet Karaoke Universe Show is a revolutionary blend of late-night bar karaoke and improv puppet theater, where an odd assortment of regular puppet characters such as Colonel J Hammer, Professor Jiggery-Pokery and Mitzil P, sing everything from pop to punk, from Sinatra to REO Speedwagon. Audience participation is an integral component of the event, as everyone is encouraged to bring an original puppet or build one onsite at a conveniently supplied craft table, then grab the stage to compete for prizes, limelight and the chance to be podcast. The event is produced by Alex Strang and R.S. Purcell of Waiting For Cable, a local producer of comedy events, animation and live action skits. The Saturday Night Puppet Karaoke Fever Show is the first major installment of this award-winning show to occur on a weekend and is the first in a series that will feature celebrity hosts.
