A well-recognized independent filmmaker, multimedia maven and oft-published poet, local arts celeb Ish Klein will master the comedic ceremonies during August's strangely-titled Puppet Karaoke HOTNUF4YA? Show at the M-Room in Fishtown, Philadelphia, the latest edition in an ongoing monthly series of interactive events where hand puppets perform real karaoke in an improv-laden anything-goes debacle presented by comedy troupe Waiting For Cable.
Ish Klein is known for constructing short films of whimsical fascination (many of them starring her own cast of puppets!). Her work has screened at the 2006 Philadelphia Film Festival, Arlene's Picture Show, and has been honored by the IFP's Project Involve Program. Last year she was awarded the National Endowment of the Arts Digital Filmmaker Residency. Ms. Klein is also a well-published poet whose work can be read, most recently, in Hat magazine, X-connect, and is due to be published in Spork magazine's upcoming Spring issue. The continuing Puppet Karaoke Universe Show boasts an unlikely though successful convergence of homemade hand puppetry, meticulously mangled pop music lyrics and fairly freewheeling improv comedy. Recently, the show has featured a parade of 'Celebrity Hosts', ranging from sketch comedy acts such as The Minor Prophets and musical marauders like Stucco Lobster Breadbox, to area personalities such as Big Tea Party's Elizabeth Fiend and the upcoming very adult hi-jinx of Dirty Diamond. No matter the host of the event, the award-garnering PKU show centers on intense audience participation first, as contenders to the karaoke throne can bring a puppet to the show or build one with onsite craft supplies for a chance to take the puppet stage and win prizes and the chance to be podcast. The PKU show is produced by Waiting For Cable, a comedy troupe consisting of exactly two people (Alex Strang and R.S. Purcell) that also produces short films and animated series' like the Secret Scare Squad, Oil Slick Gang and many more. Mr. Strang and Purcell have acres of professional experience in the TV business and have been performing the PKU show for 2 years in the Philadelphia area. The M-Room is located at 15 W Girard Ave in Fishtown, Philadelphia. The show is Thursday, Aug 24th at 9:00 PM. There is a $5 cover and advance tickets are available at http://www.cybergecko.com. |
