Mash up a Battle of the Art bands, an eye-opening collection of fine art, and some smart-alecky puppets and you have one crazy Philly Fringe event, the much-anticipated Fishtasticon 2. This year, the notoriously world-famous Oil Slick Gang, covered in fossil fuel and dripping with hand puppet wit, will host the proceedings and inject some irreverent comedic improv into what has become a Philadelphia (and certainly Fishtown) happening of transcendental proportions. This year's show will be Saturday Sep 9th at 8PM, at the M-Room, 15 West Girard Ave.
Fishtasticon 2 is a truly unique combination of multigenre musical acts, paintings, photographs and mixed-media pieces from area artists, gathered in a half-gallery, half-concert, half barroom setting (that's three halves!) with an eye on entertainment and community activism. The event is a fundraiser for, and is created by, local arts organization PositievSpace. Scheduled musical guests include Pro Viso, David Talento and David E. Williams. Featured fine artists include Simon Grigsby, Andrea W. Silva, Nick Silva, David Talento, Mike McJilton, Matt Hollerbush, Vick Aita, Rebecca Waleski and Cynthia Dietrich The OIl Slick Gang is a popular trio of petroleum-drenched puppets (an Otter, Fish and Bird) who have starred in a number of films (Make Coffee Not OIl, Makin' Movies, an episode of the Hook-Ups satirical dating show) and have hosted quite a few live events throughout the region. The OSG take a not-so-serious approach to world events, pop culture and anything else that enters their addled brains. They are the creation of Waiting For Cable, the comedy duo of Alex Strang and R.S. Purcell, two TV and movie professionals who also produce the ongoing href="../wfc/pk.htm">Puppet Karaoke Universe live show and podcast series. PositiveSpace is an Artists Collective founded in 2002 with a mission to foster a network of local artists and to develop relationships between artists and their community. Previous events have included the perennial Arts & Crap Sale and the Standard Craft and Rocket Craft sales, as well as various art openings throughout the area. The M-Room is located at 15 W Girard Ave in Fishtown, Philadelphia. The show is Saturday, Sep 9th at 8:00 PM. There is a $5 cover.
